Today, an anonymous woman in the crowd offers this huge and flattering compliment to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Surely she is not referring solely to Mary's gestation and nurturance of a baby, but also her motherly role that raised her baby boy to be the man who, with his wisdom and style, was now making such an impression on the woman in the crowd. Blessed indeed is that woman who raised him.
i find myself wondering if the woman in the crowd was also a mother. Did she have her own understanding of what it took to raise a child? Jesus was just talking about getting rid of demons. Had this woman had a demon cast from one of her children? From herself? i sometimes want to know more about the unidentified cameos in the gospel than what the gospels disclose.
It is also interesting that Jesus does not respond to her generous benediction. Instead, he refocuses attention on the words of his message: Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.
There they are again. You've heard it before: hear, listen, act. How are you doing with that?
