Saint of the day - The Assumption of Mary into Heaven
Readings for today’s Mass
By this decree, the Church recognizes Mary's unique role in salvation history as the mother of Jesus. Her response to God in Lk 1:38 was the continuation of something that began with her Immaculate Conception. By the Holy Spirit, the one who was conceived without original sin, would not be stained by mortal decay. Upon her death, (her dormition or falling asleep) the Church believes that the body and soul of Mary was gloriously taken (assumed) into heaven.
The Assumption of Mary is one of only two infallibly declared dogmas of our faith. The other is the Immaculate Conception of Mary. (No, not every word or thought of a sitting pope is infallible.) Papal infallibility didn't come into being until the 1st Vatican council of 1870.
Not everyone is asked to assume the task of being the mother of Jesus. Still as Christians, we are all called to give birth to Christ in the way we do the work of building his kingdom. It is for us to bring Christ to those around us on campus, down town or in the marketplace. Like Mary, we too will one day be glorified.
