But then something omitted from the story happened and the crowds turned against him. They said thing like, “Wait a minute! We know who you are. You’re the handy man’s son. We know you and your family - your mother, your brothers and sisters. Who do you think you are?” And the gospel says further “they took offense at him.”
I wonder what happened that brought about such a change in those gathered. What caused their hearts to be so quickly closed! Why did they see him in such a different light? Was it what he was teaching that turned heads away? Was his teaching suddenly too challenging? Did it hit home for the listeners?
It must have been a harsh put down, as Jesus said to them, "There is no honor for a prophet (himself) in his native place (his hometown) and among his own kin (his extended family) and in his own house (his immediate family).” This isn’t the first time Jesus gets a verbal whipping from the attitudes of others. I wonder what happened.
As you have come to know the message of Jesus, do you find teachings that seem a bit too much? Is there something in his teaching that really challenge you? Spend some time asking yourself why that is.
