I found out how important thumbs are when I was playing center on my school's football team. At the start of the fourth quarter of our last game, we were making a comeback for the championship. In a pile-up, somebody stepped on my hand. Suddenly I felt excruciating pain in my right thumb. Broken. How could I snap the ball? Not well. Not well. I never thought much about my thumbs until that moment.
All of us have our part to play in the Body of Christ. Instead of wasting our lives trying to play someone else's role, Christ invites us to be who we were created to be. A final story from the Jewish tradition. The legendary Rabbi Zusya lay on his deathbed. His followers asked him if he had any final wisdom to share with them. Zusya's eyes opened and, taking a deep breath, he said, "In the world to come, I will not be asked, Why were you not Moses? I will be asked, Why were you not Zusya?"
What is your "part" in the Body of Christ? You have one!
