Readings for today’s Mass
Today is also the feast of Saint Andrew the apostle. In researching a little about Saint Andrew, I learned a few interesting facts. In addition to being the brother of Simon Peter, his name gives us insight into Andrew and Peter’s family life. The name “Andrew” is of Greek origin, not Aramaic, whereas “Simon” is an Aramaic name. Pope Benedict XVI commented: The first striking characteristic of Andrew
is his name: It is not Hebrew, as might have been expected, but Greek,
indicative of a certain cultural openness in his family that cannot be
ignored. We are in Galilee, where the Greek language and culture are
quite present [General Audience, June 14, 2006].
So, even among the first disciples of Jesus, we have a mix of different cultures and an acceptance of different ways of life.
As we draw closer to the season of Advent, when Christians around the World prepare to celebrate the birth of the Savior, let us continue to work towards a spirit of ecumenism. To be open to learning more about other faith traditions and live in the unity that Jesus Christ is Lord.
