Readings for today’s Mass
The second part of the psalm is a reminder of God's response to those who hear God's voice but harden their hearts, who don't listen to the invitation. These, God said, are loathed, so much so that God swears against then in anger. This is the fate of the ancestors who went astray.
All of this is sandwiched between a pair of double alleluias signifying our joy in hearing God's word in the gospel about to be proclaimed. The gospel verse is clear. When you stand at Mass to hear the word of God, sing Alleluia and receive the word of God in your heart. It only works if you harden not your heart. If you can't do that, you may as well stay sitting.
