Let's face it, we all mess up. We all "owe" a debt to someone who has helped us out or given us a break. Imagine if God never forgave us for the wrongs we do? Even when dying on the cross, Jesus declared, Father, forgive them for they don't know what they're doing.
Where does such forgiveness come from? It begins in empathy -- putting myself in someone else's shoes. Nelson Mandela the "father of free South Africa" told his followers -- many of whom wanted retribution for the wrongs of apartheid -- "Even in the grimmest times in prison, when my comrades and I were pushed to our limits, I would see a glimmer of humanity in one of the guards, perhaps just for a second, but it was enough to reassure me and keep me going."
Jesus forgave in the midst of his execution; Mandela forgave in his prison cell. If I can remember that my enemy is a human in need of forgiveness, I am choosing life and hope.
