Readings for today’s Mass
In the 12th century, St. Dominic had an experience that speaks to the pope's actions today. Dominic et. al. were preaching against the Albigensian heresy when he realized that the ordinary people were more likely to followed the ascetical heroes of the Albigenses. They were unimpressed by Catholic preachers who traveled with horse and retinues, stayed at four star hotels and had servants. Dominic became an itinerant preacher according to the gospel ideal and was successful with the ordinary people but not with the leaders.
Like today's saint, the Holy Father continues to be an example of the gospel values (they sold all they had and gave it to the poor) of simplicity, humility and equality that our time needs to see from our leadership.
How about you. How important in your life is glitz and drama? How do you balance bling with simplicity? How does the example of Pope Francis speak to you? If you need to make some changes, now is a good time for that.
