Bishops and popes like to do that. Rightfully, they are always inviting and encouraging young people, not just to come to church, but to be the Church. Young people, on the other hand, feel they have so little to offer the local church where they too often go unnoticed. Who would expect great things from high school and college kids?
Today's saint, Louis of Toulouse, could be another patron of young people, along with Aloysius Gonzaga. Louis died at 23, an age when many students are finishing college. By that time, he had become a Franciscan monk, was consecrated a bishop and was widely regarded as a saint by popular public acclaim.
But, you may protest, that was the thirteenth century. Things were different then. Well, maybe so, but the Church and governance was still in the hands of older men. Louis, at a time when he would have been finishing high school, was already recognized for what he had to offer, even at such a tender age.
As you plot your way thru life, don't wait too long to make an impact. You can always finish college, settle into a job and pay down your student loans. Marriage, a family and buying a house will come along too. The Church and the Kingdom of God is here now. Begin to make your mark as one of its members today. After all, now is all the time you really have to get it done.
