Readings for today’s Mass
Last week there was a reflection with the challenge for the disciples to be people of peace.Their first action when coming to a new place was to offer a blessing of peace. Today, Jesus has something quite different to say. The call is still to "follow me", but aside from that, what he says about messing up relationships is quite harsh indeed. The cost of discipleship is steep. Fathers and sons, mothers and daughters being turned against each other is hardly a message of peace.
As followers of Christ, it is the message of Jesus that is always the last word. Whatever gets in the way of that call, compromises our response to the call - even family relationships. That's tough. But consider the second last verse of today's gospel passage. These key words, "because he is a disciple", are akin to other words found in the gospels that speak to whatever we do for the sake of the kingdom and "in my name."
It seems that Jesus' invitation is to keep us focused on the kingdom. It serves nothing to turn the world against itself. But that can easily happen when we let the stuff of our world get in the way of what it means to be a disciple, to follow Jesus.
What are the things that keep you from fully taking on the task of building the kingdom? What will you do about it?
