Readings for today’s Mass
In these examples, as in today’s gospel, Jesus has been overrun by people in need of his word and his healing touch. The word of his power was getting around and he was achieving rock-star status. How does Jesus recover from being overwhelmed? He does what i do. He relishes quiet time alone.
“He was like us in all things…” Like us, Jesus had moments when he just ran out of gas and needed to seek out solitude for prayer and rest. Sometimes withdrawing to the beech sounds very inviting.
How often do you seek the company of God when you need to be refreshed and renewed? Or do you turn to other resources to deal with exhaustion? Students always start a new year refreshed and eager to get at it, but by mid semester or near finals week things start to change. You might start to feel like it’s just too much. If that sounds like you, what will you do for yourself to keep it together? Will you withdraw to a lonely place where you might find God? I suggest you give it a try.
